Artist Biography

James Jenkins was born in Ancon, Canal Zone (Panama) on June 1st, 1968. As a child, his family traveled extensively before moving to El Paso, TX in 1983. He then graduated from Austin High School in 1986.

“I started sculpting at a young age. I think it was sixth grade in Berlin, Germany when I discovered I had a knack for creating things from clay. The first piece I remember ever making was a shark. I’ve always been drawn to artistic endeavors-right brained activities including woodworking, cooking, painitng, drawing, and writing.”

After a two year stay in El Paso, James joined the Army as a radar technician and went back to Europe. In 1991, at the conclusion of the Persian Gulf War, Jim received an honorable discharge from the Army and moved to the east coast. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in broadcasting at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner, Massachusetts and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management from the University of Phoenix while living in Central America.

Jim has taught sculpting in San Diego and El Paso. “For me polymer clay is the perfect medium to work in. It cures at a low temperature, it is readily available from hobby stores, and it creates a relatively small mess.”
